Scripture Thursday ~ Guard My Mouth

Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth;
keep the door of my lips.
Psalm 141:3 (KJV)

Have you ever spoken a thought?  You know…… when the words you were thinking come blurting out of your mouth without evaluating the impact they may have?  I’m sure we can all think of an occasion when we’ve done that.

Set a guard over my mouth, O Lord;

keep watch over the door of my lips.
Psalm 141:3 (NIV)

We’re told in Ephesians 4:29 (NIV)
Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths,
but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs,
that it may benefit those who listen.

James 3:3-7 talks specifically about the tongue, comparing and describing it as:

  • a small part of the body which makes great boasts
  • a bit in the mouth of horses, that can turn the whole animal
  • a very small rudder controlling a large ship in a strong wind
  • a small spark which can start a great forest fire
  • evil among the parts of the body
  • ability to corrupt the whole person
  • can set one’s whole course of life on fire
  • the tongue cannot be tamed
  • it is full of deadly poison

Once a word is spoken, it’s out there…there’s no taking it back.

  • A single sentence to a teenager could drive them to an eating disorder.
  • Complaining about someone practicing an instrument can stifle their gift
  • Hasty words to your children can leave their little hearts wounded
  • Nagging words to your husband may make him not want to come home
  • Spreading gossip, or unverified stories can ruin friendships, and damage reputations
  • Lying words cause people to distrust you

If unkind or gossipy words easily flow from your mouth, perhaps you need to re-evaluate the underlying cause.  Often the people we are the closest to, see our true colors.   There is power in our words ~ lots of power.

Do what you need to do to tame your tongue.
Use it to HELP, not hurt;
to ENCOURAGE, not discourage;
to LOVE,  not hate;
to BUILD UP, not tear down;
to SOOTHE, not sting.

Do you remember the poem, Children Learn What They Live by Dorothy Law Nolte?  Here are a few excerpts from that:
If children live with criticism, they learn to condemn.
If children live with ridicule, they learn to feel shy.
If children live with encouragement, they learn confidence.
If children live with praise, they learn appreciation.

Think before you speak……If you’re not sure what to say, say NOTHING.

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.
~ Abraham Lincoln ~

Oh me! I was just reading at a sweet blog last night about hurtful comments that can be made. The blogger, and I'll think of the blog name in a minute, said that she smiles as sweetly as possible, looks directly into the eyes, and says, "Did you mean to say that out loud?" There have definitely been times when I have said a thing and wished immediately that I could take it back.

("The Blessing of Verity" is the blog, I think.)

Thank you for another thought-provoking post.

WOW Abby! POWERFUL POST! USUALLY, I am NOT one to have quick "come backs" to people when they say things that offend...I usually go home & later think of things I COULD HAVE SAID! I USED to kick myself for not being more witty but, have learned it's BETTER TO NOT SAY ANYTHING!(I believe MANY think it's a weakness!) I HAVE stuck my foot in my mouth on occasion! Leaving me feeling like a FOOL! I believe a QUICK APOLOGY is A MUST!

Abby, thanks for this heartfelt post. Your sharing with us at WAW is always a blessing and I appreciate you so very much. I am blogging from my mother's kitchen table (a place I love to be) and you Lways give me food for thought. I love you, my friend and dear sister in the Lord. Have a blessed day.

P.S. can't wait to see what you ordered from ODB with your gift certificate.

Hi Abby, You bet, been there done that. Thanks for reminding us with your words and beautiful images. I'm looking for an image of public domain free sheet music for the song, This Little Light of Mine. I'm wondering if you might have a copy in your vintage library? Joyous Wishes, Linda

Thank you, Abby, for speaking truth in your devotion. I am a wife, mom, and teacher, so I talk all the time, and have certainly regretted hasty words. I pray this verse: may the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.

Bless you for sharing,
Christine

I remember the "Children Learn what they Live" poem.

Thank you so much for sharing this week's post Abby. It's yet another little reminder to stay on the right path! believe it or not, I was contemplating this very thing in the morning and had concerns of how if I brought up a certain discussion that it would cause un-needed stress for the person I would have discussed it with. It's like God was telling me "shhh" about this for now. When the time is right to talk about it, you'll know. :o)

hugs!

A very thought provoking post Abby! I'd like to know how many times I've prayed, "Set a watch, O LORD, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips." (Proverbs 141:3) Unfortunately, I've had to pray them in repentance at times because my words weren't what they ought to be!

Thank You for the powerful exhortation. I know I have been guilty of not taming my tongue and have needed to eat crow a time or two! Participating in gossip, even just listening is so harmful to our spiritual lives. If you know someone who gossips and listen, chances are they are gossiping about you to someone else. I have had to learn this the hard way :(. Praise God for his mercy and love that can change and heal us! Blessings! Adrienne

Amen, Amen, Amen! Oh,what a wonderful devotion and card! My frequently thought of verse: Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight. Many times I don't have to speak...my thoughts/heart are condemning alone! Thank you for sharing your work at Word Art Wednesday Abby.

Abby sweet friend...what an excellent reminder to be mindful of how we use our tongues. At our house, I remind my children (and self) that "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all". Yes, straight from the movie "Bambi". :o) I'm glad you shared this at WJIM.
