A hymn of encouragement for those (as the song says) with trials, burdens, sorrows, heartaches, tears, danger, weakness, and sickness that points us to our God who moment by moment, keeps us in His love.

This hymn Moment by Moment was written by Daniel Whittle (1840-1901). While attending the World's Fair in Chicago, he heard a pastor remark he needed God every moment of the day. This prompted Whittle to pen the lyrics to the hymn. His daughter May Whittle Moody (wife of D.L.Moody's son), composed the music.

Whittle offered Ira Sankey (American gospel singer and composer, associated with evangelist D.L. Moody) copyright of both words and music if he'd have 500 copies printed on fine paper. Whittle distributed these to his friends. Sankey had the hymn published and it became very popular in England as well as a favorite of Andrew Murray, a South African writer, teacher and Pastor.

Did you see how God works in this little hymn story? A man went to the fair; heard a remark; wrote words based on that remark, gave to his daughter who wrote music for it, daughter happened to be married to an evangelist's son. Evangelist happened to have a singer and composer who could get the song copied and published, which ended up in the hands of a well known writer, pastor and teacher.

I wonder how many people this hymn has encouraged?? Probably millions. There are no coincidences with God. When we're faithful to what He prompts us to do, we are part of a bigger plan . . the full extent known only to Him.

There is great comfort received when listening, singing or playing the old hymns. The words are timeless. I grew up with the old hymns and started playing them on the piano when I was quite young. I'd listen to them intently in church and go home and play them.

Why Good Friday was Good

But He was wounded for our transgressions, 
He was bruised for our iniquities;

The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,

GOOD FRIDAY - The Friday before Jesus' resurrection, the day of his crucifixion. A day which was part of a plan to free you and free me from our sins. Jesus' death and resurrection would change eternity by offering each and every one of us a free gift from God, the gift of Salvation. How? God's word tells us:

that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus 

and believe in your heart 

that God has raised Him from the dead, 

you will be saved.

Romans 10:9 NKJV

The story does not end with the cross.

On Easter Sunday, we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus
and the HOPE that gives us the promise ~
Because He lives, we can live also.

A Shelter in the Storm - Hymn

It's been snowing for more than 24 hours here in Maine. Schools and businesses are closed, we're advised not to travel. We are "hunkered" down with our provisions, "weathering the storm" until it passes.

This particular storm is uncharacteristic for this time of year, as are many of the sudden "storms" that come upon our lives - Jesus can be our shelter during these rough times.

The hymn below was said to be a favorite song of the fisherman on the north coast of England, and they were often heard singing it as they approached their harbors in the time of storm.

Just As I Am ~ Hymn Story

In 1828, at the age of 32, Charlotte Elliott suffered a serious illness that left her an invalid. This caused depression, and a severe spiritual crisis. A Swiss evangelist was visiting her family, and she told him that she didn’t know how to come to Christ. He told her, “Come to him just as you are.” Her depression continued, however. Twelve years later, she was still distressed by her uselessness as an invalid.  She decided she needed to meet her spiritual troubles head on and conquer them by the grace of God.  She wrote down her own formula of faith,  remembering those words of the visiting evangelist. In the end she had the words to the hymn known as "Just As I Am".

In Billy Graham's own words:
When I was converted in 1937, under the ministry of the evangelist Mordecai Hamm, two invitation songs were used and a total of eight stanzas were sung. I did not respond to the invitation until the final verse of the second song, and I have always been grateful that the evangelist waited so patiently. One of those hymns was "Just As I Am, Without One Plea". 

Billy used this hymn at most all of his crusades as people came forward to give their lives to Jesus. A woman who felt useless, penned the words to this hymn that have touched millions of lives. Billy Graham’s autobiography is titled “Just As I Am”.

It truly amazes me how God works in our lives. All we have to do is have a willing heart and follow His leading. What do you enjoy doing? Do you write poetry; music; devotions? Are you artistic; do you cook? I enjoy making digital graphics with scripture and hymns, and I enjoy photography and vintage images. Piano, Hymns, and scripture were instilled in me from the time I was a toddler. God had plans for all of this. One of His plans is right here in this online ministry - Little Birdie Blessings.

Who am I to be used by God? I'm a nobody. Poor life choices kept me from college. Ill health, insecurities and anxiety gave me a feeling of uselessness, just like Charlotte Elliott.

If God can use a “useless invalid” like Charlotte Elliott, He can use us. Ask Him how He can use you and your gifts/talents.

God doesn't call the qualified, 

he qualifies the called. 

I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.
John 15:5

25 Days God Given Gifts - Day 21 - GUIDANCE

Trust in the LORD with all your heart

 and lean not on your own understanding; 

in all your ways submit to him, 

and he will make your paths straight. 

Proverbs 3:5-6

As I was thinking about this scripture, a life verse for many. I compared the kind of trust Jesus is looking for in us, to that of a child. During the first few years of life, children who receive warm loving care, are able to establish a sense of trust with their parents or caregivers. Without a doubt, they know they will be fed, changed and loved. It may not come in their timing, but they know it will happen.

As they grow into the toddler years and venture out on mini explorations, they have the confidence to turn away from danger, and go back to the caregiver they trust, for reassurance, protection and guidance. 

That’s what Jesus wants from us. Never a doubt that He will be THAT caregiver for us and meet our needs. Let's TRUST Him with complete confidence that He will do what is best for our life. He tells us in Isaiah 55:8, His ways are not our ways. Why? Because He’s all knowing. He knows our future. He sees the Master plan. Who better to put our trust in, than someone who knows us better than we know ourselves?

In ALL our ways, everything we do, He wants us to acknowledge him. He’ll keep us on the path we need to go, we just need to TRUST and obey.

The hymn Trust and Obey was written in 1887. Here is the first verse.
When we walk with the Lord in the light of His Word,

What a glory He sheds on our way!

While we do His good will, He abides with us still,

And with all who will trust and obey.

Trust and obey, for there’s no other way

To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.

25 Days God Given Gifts ~ Day 15 ~ JOY

 You make known to me the path of life;

    you will fill me with joy in your presence. 

Psalm 16:11a

Joy to the World is such a robust hymn of praise, written in 1719 by Isaac Watts. The more voices singing, the better it sounds. The first hymn of our Christmas church service is always "Joy to the World".

Mr. Watts didn’t intend for Joy to the World to be a Christmas carol. He in fact wrote this song based on Psalm 98. The lyrics were later adapted to what is believed to be music from Handel’s Messiah.   This hymn is one of the most sung Christmas carols today.

Joy to the world, the Lord is come!

Let earth receive her King;

Let every heart prepare Him room,

And Heaven and nature sing,

And Heaven and nature sing,

And Heaven, and Heaven, and nature sing.

This time of year it's easy to lose focus of what's important in all the demands and expectations we sometimes find ourselves in. Remember this easy acronym for JOY, a children's song titled "Jesus and Others and You" written by B. Metzger, 1951.

Jesus and others and you

What a wonderful way to spell joy

Jesus and others and you

in the life of each girl and each boy

"J" is for Jesus for He has first place,

"O" is for others you meet face to face,

Advent Series ~ Day 5 ~ GRACE

For it is by grace you have been saved,

 through faith—

and this is not from yourselves,

 it is the gift of God. 

Ephesians 2:8

Have you ever wondered just what is so amazing about GRACE?  The hymn Amazing Grace is very popular.  Sometimes popular becomes common if we’re used to hearing it all the time.  The title of this hymn is just two simple common words. 

Websters 1828 dictionary states the definition of these words as follows:

AMAZING

Confounding with fear, surprise or wonder.

Very wonderful; exciting astonishment, or perplexity.

GRACE

Appropriately, the free unmerited love and favor of God, the spring and source of all the benefits men receive from him

If you put the two definitions together you have:

Very wonderful, free unmerited love and favor of God. The source of all the benefits men receive from him.

John Newton, the composer of the "Amazing Grace" hymn said:

Though I am not what I ought to be,

nor what I wish to be, nor yet what I hope to be,

I can truly say I am not what I once was . . . .
By the grace of God I am what I am!

Composed in the 1779, the hymn Amazing Grace is probably the most popular hymn in the English language.  John Newton was a slave trader before coming to know Jesus.  We are all sinners who have a choice to be saved by God’s GRACE, as Mr. Newton writes about below. A Song in the Night

Joni Eareckson Tada credits her father with instilling hymns in her from the time she was a young child. For those who haven't heard of Joni, as a teenager, she became a paraplegic in a diving accident. The Lord has used her in a mighty way over the years. I'll put a link to her ministry at the end of this post.

She tells how God gave us a built in instrument to make music - our voice. We can sing, hum, and whistle. For someone like Joni, this certainly comes in handy, and she has a beautiful voice to sing. For those who think they can't "carry a tune", if you're singing praises to God, He hears you in perfect pitch.

Many of us I'm sure have nights we don't sleep well, but we're able to get up, re-position, get a drink, etc. Joni is totally dependent on someone else to do the simplest tasks for her.  She tells about one of those nights in the book "Songs in the Night" by Henry Gariepy (Inspiring Stories behind 100 Hymns Born in Trial and Suffering).

"In one of those mad, midnight moments during my long convalescence, I came up with a song. Since I couldn't jump out of bed and get a pad of paper and pen, I carefully pondered and memorized each phrase as it came. When the whole poem was complete in my head, I didn't feel so depressed about the will of God". Here is the song God gave to Joni:

I have a piece of china,
A pretty porcelain vase,
It holds such lovely flowers,
Captures everybody's gaze.
But fragile things do slip and fall
As everybody knows,
And when that vase came crashing down,
Those tears began to flow.

My life was just like china,
A lovely thing to me.
Full of porcelain promises
Of all that I might be.
But fragile things do slip and fall
As everybody knows,
And when my life came crashing down,

Now Jesus is no porcelain prince,
His promises won't break.
His holy Word holds fast and sure,
His love no one can shake.

This is My Father's World

Many years ago around the late 1800's, a pastor from Lockport, New York named Maltbie D. Babcock like to hike. There was one area in particular he liked to go called the escarpment, an old upthrust ledge near Lockport. He described it as a marvelous view of farms, orchards and Lake Ontario. It is said those walks inspired the lyrics to this hymn "This is My Father's World". Before Babcock would walk, he'd often say "I'm going out to see my Father's world."

Here are the lyrics to this timeless hymn written so long ago. I would imagine Mr. Babcock would be pleased to know it's still sung today.

This is my Father’s world,

And to my listening ears

All nature sings, and round me rings

The music of the spheres.

I rest me in the thought

The Importance of Hymns

There are over one thousand scriptures in the Bible which reference music in one form or another.   Hymns were instilled in me from a very young age, they came naturally to me, and I learned very quickly.  The Lord gifted me with an ear for music, and He had future plans for me to use that gift.  

As I’ve mentioned here before, I am the pianist for our church and have played the piano since I was four years old.  The old hymns are near and dear to me.  I can remember an old pump organ in our home that I liked to play.  There was just one problem…. I couldn’t reach the pedals.  My sisters took pity on me and would pump them for me so the sound would come out while I played.

Missionary and author, Elisabeth Elliot says this about hymns:

One of the things that I think is so important and often neglected nowadays is the learning of hymns, because it’s an easy way to learn theology. My father was not a theologian, but he was a very, very devout Christian and a writer and an editor of a Christian magazine. But we sang a hymn every single morning after breakfast. Because of that, we children learned hymns by heart without any effort whatsoever.

The old hymns are often thought of as old fashioned today and boring. However, most are timeless pieces of Christian history that were written in times of adversity.  Many of the joyful hymns were written BECAUSE of the adversity. They provide such comfort and encouragement just when we need it. 

Elizabeth Preniss

Elizabeth Prentiss, who wrote the hymn  More Love to Thee, O Christ (1856) had this to say about her life.  Much of my experience of life has cost me a great price and I wish to use it for strengthening and comforting other souls.  

Fanny Crosby

Blind hymn writer Fanny Crosby had NO earthly vision.  I know from studying her life and her hymns, what she lacked in physical vision with her eyes, she made up for it with the eyes of her heart.  She wrote thousands of hymns that touched people deeply, still today. 

Without the blindness, some of the popular hymns below would never have been heard.

You don’t have to be musical to enjoy the old hymns or appreciate the words. Old hymn books can often be found in thrift stores or in used book stores. Sometimes just reading the words will minister to your soul. 

Often with the hymns I’m familiar with, I’ll say them rather than sing them and the words take on new meaning with the different approach.

The Cyber Hymnal is a huge database of hymns and the history behind them.  Searchable in many different ways.  You can even hear the tune to a hymn if you're not familiar with it.

Resurrection Day

He is Risen!
He is Risen Indeed! 

But the angel answered and said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; for He is risen, as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.  And go quickly and tell His disciples that He is risen from the dead,  Matthew 28:5-7a 

The hymn Christ the Lord is Risen Today was written around 1739 by Charles Wesley, a famous hymn-writer.  All these years later, it is one of the most popular Easter hymns in the English language.   

Christ, the Lord, is risen today, Alleluia!

Sons of men and angels say, Alleluia!

Raise your joys and triumphs high, Alleluia!

Sing, ye heavens, and earth, reply, Alleluia!
