Scripture Thursday ~ Amazing Grace

For the Lord God is a sun and shield: the Lord will give grace and glory:
no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.
Psalm 84:11

The hymn Amazing Grace is very popular.  Sometimes popular becomes common if we’re used to hearing it all the time.  The title of this hymn is just two simple common words.
Websters 1828 dictionary states the definition of these words as follows:

AMAZING
Confounding with fear, surprise or wonder.
Very wonderful; exciting astonishment, or perplexity.

GRACE
Appropriately, the free unmerited love and favor of God,
the spring and source of all the benefits men receive from him

And if by grace, then it is no more of works…. Romans 11:6

You can find the full definition of GRACE here – it is quite lengthy but informative
If you put the two definitions together you have:
Very wonderful, free unmerited love and favor of God.
The source of all the benefits men receive from him.

John Newton, the composer of this hymn said:
Though I am not what I ought to be,
 nor what I wish to be, nor yet what I hope to be,
 I can truly say I am not what I once was . . . .
By the grace of God I am what I am!

John Newton, Composer Amazing Grace

Composed in the 1779, this hymn is probably the most popular hymn in the English language.  John Newton was a slave trader before coming to Christ.  We are all sinners who have a choice to be saved by God’s GRACE, as Mr. Newton writes about below.

Amazing grace! How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found;
Was blind, but now I see.

’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed!

Through many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come;
’Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.

The Lord has promised good to me,
His Word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be,
As long as life endures.

I’m participating in a Hymn Challenge and thought I’d combine that project with Scripture Thursday.  You can read more about this hymn and its history at Triple the Scraps with Patter. 2. Dear Abby, Amazing Grace, that song has always meant so much to me! Especially now, when this seems to be a "graceless age", His grace transcends all else, and because of Him I can have grace and show it in my life toward others..
    My grandmother, Grace, lived with us in her final years, and we would call her Amazing Grace, and sing it to her. She lived to be 95.
    A couple years ago, I read an exciting book of John Newton's amazing true story, which makes me even more attached to this hymn. I often cry when I play it on the piano, when I am all alone.
    I love your scripture today!
    Thank you so much!

  7. Wow Abby I ~*love*~ your scripture designs! They are so beautiful. Thanks for sharing the information about John Newton as well.

    I did not know his story until reading this post. It's interesting because just two days ago my partner and I were discussing with our neighbors how the area where we live used to be an escape route for the slaves. When I got your message last night I quickly looked up "Amazing Grace" on youtube and was drawn to the gospel choir versions. It's interesting how these are all tied together.

    So cool that you and Marcia are doing a giveaway. I love her scripture tags. :)

  8. Abby, thanks for sharing such a timely post. We live in a day where the grace of God is abused by many and anything goes in the name of "grace" not even taking in to consideration the command to obey. Perhaps the definition you shared will bring about a conviction that will restore many to Christ. Praying for you dear sister. BTW, your blog looks great and your digis are always so beautiful. You are such a blessing to those following your blog!

  9. Oh my, I stopped by since this morning but for some reason could not comment with internet explorer. I am now trying through google chrome. It has happened to me with two different pages today so it's most likely not your page but some other cause.
    Okay, let me try this again. :) I love that Newton quote and I think I'm taking it with me, if you don't mind. :) Your graphic is gorgeous as usual. Love the verse and love the color combination. So perfect for spring.
    Thank you for graciously hosting another party this week, Abby.
    Much love!!
