Day by Day

As thy days, so shall thy strength be.
Deuteronomy 33:25

This week I shared the lyrics of a hymn with a friend who needed some encouragement.  It's actually one of my favorite hymns and it titled Day by Day.  It was written by Karolina Sandell Berg in 1865.

Day by day, and with each passing moment,
Strength I find, to meet my trials here;
Trusting in my Father’s wise bestowment,
I’ve no cause for worry or for fear.

He whose heart is kind beyond all measure
Gives unto each day what He deems best—
Lovingly, its part of pain and pleasure,
Mingling toil with peace and rest.
Every day, the Lord Himself is near me
With a special mercy for each hour;
All my cares He fain would bear, and cheer me,
He whose name is Counselor and Power;

The protection of His child and treasure
Is a charge that on Himself He laid;
As thy days, thy strength shall be in measure,
This the pledge to me He made.

Help me then, in every tribulation
So to trust Thy promises, O Lord,
That I lose not faith’s sweet consolation
Offered me within Thy holy Word.

Help me, Lord, when toil and trouble meeting,
E’er to take, as from a father’s hand,
One by one, the days, the moments fleeting,
Till I reach the promised land.

Such wisdom and comfort in the words of that hymn written 146 years ago.  Interesting how so much has changed over time, but our feelings, trials, our need to be comforted, has not changed.

  1. Abby - I have always believed those old hymns are teeming with teaching! The cadence of their rhyme makes them roll off the tongue in recitation easier than today's lyrics and complex melodies. Thanks for sharing. And - I LOVE the ladies in their hats. They are a particular collection of mine and I love to study the millinery styles. You're so dear to share so generously! Looking forward to receiving my gift cards form last Friday's give-away!
    Joy!

  4. Abby, that hymn is one of my favorites too. I've included it in several cards I've made to people going through a tough time and needing some of that Day to Day grace.
    Love the gorgeous yellow roses - thanks for sharing!

  5. Thank you for posting the reassuring words to this beautiful hymn! I sang them as I read them, they are such a comfort, and reminded me that God will supply the grace and strength I need today, and each day, one day at a time, as I trust Him. Nothing is impossible with God and I will just put one foot in front of the other and know all will be okay!
    Thank you for the pretty yellow rose picture! Bless you! Linda
