A Mother Who Prays - Poem - Free Graphics

Some have had kings in their lineage,
Some to whom honor was paid.
Not blest of my ancestors - but,
I have a mother who prays.

I have a mother who prays for me
And pleads with the Lord every day for me.
Oh what a difference it makes for me -
I have a mother who prays.

Some have worldly success
And trust in riches they've made -
This is my surest asset,
I have a mother who prays.

My mother's prayers cannot save me,
Only mine can avail;
But mother introduced me to Someone -
Someone who never could fail.

Oh yes..I have a mother who prays for me
And pleads with the Lord every day for me.
O what a difference it makes for me -
I have a mother who prays.

Well known women’s Bible teacher and author Elizabeth George says: You and I as parents must always be praying hope for our children regardless of their age or stage in life.

In fact, this is yet another one of God’s “missions” for moms and dads: We are to be diligent prayer warriors. We are to do battle through prayer on behalf of our precious children. Pray for their spiritual growth into a man or woman after God’s own heart as your calling, your mission assignment from God.

Commit to doing your part
and trust God to do His!

Mothers of Influence

The mothers mentioned below are just a few of the many examples of a Proverbs 31 woman.
Proverbs 31:30 refers to a woman who "fears" the Lord.  This is not referring to the type of fear we think of today.  Websters 1828 dictionary explains it well: the fear of God is a holy awe or reverence of God.

Susannah Wesley
Susannah Wesley (1669 – 1742) mother to 19 children and famous hymn writer Charles Wesley (wrote over 9,000 hymns), as well as John Wesley, a great preacher of his day.  Mrs. Wesley prayed one hour a day for her children, and could often be seen with her apron over her head – a sign to her children that she was praying.   She also set aside individual time for each child to teach them spiritual things.  A mother of influence teaches her children to pray.

Mrs. Graham with her son Billy

Morrow Coffey Graham (1892 – 1981) prayed that her son would become a world-renowned evangelist and taught him to trust God and believe the Bible.   Her prayers were answered for her son Billy Graham, preached to more people than any other evangelist.   She never stopped praying for him until the day she died.  A mother of influence prays diligently for her children.

Amy Carmichael

Catherine Jane Carmichael (unknown – 1913) taught her daughter Amy Carmichael to love and trust God for all her needs.  Amy later became a very famous missionary to India, rescuing thousands of girls from a life of abuse.  She was known as the mother to the motherless.  A mother of influence nurtures her children and releases them to God’s care.

Mercy Crosby mother to Fanny Crosby (born 1820) was totally devoted to her only daughter.  Blinded in infancy, Fanny was taught the Bible by her mother and grandmother.  She committed much of it to memory and became one of the most famous hymn writers of all time, writing over 9,000 hymns. Her mother was a firm believer in prayer and taught Fanny the same.  Because of her mother and grandmother’s influence, Fanny’s hymns have blessed millions of people.  A mother of influence devotes herself to her children’s needs.

A Mother Who Prays

Prayer changes lives ~ If your mother is no longer with you and she prayed for you, it made a difference in your life. If you have children - adult or small, pray every day for them, you might be the only one who is.

Scripture Thursday ~ Featured Friends for Mother's Day

Who can find a virtuous woman?
for her price is far above rubies.

Proverbs 31:10

Mother's Day History:  The campaign to make "Mother's Day" a recognized holiday in the U.S. was started by Anna Jarvis, and became successful in 1914.  It is celebrated all over the world.  Traditionally, a person offers a gift, card or remembrance toward their mothers, grandmothers and/or maternal figure on Mother's Day. ~ Wikipedia ~

My friend Stephanie from The Enchanting Rose Blog, has offered to be a guest today featuring her Scripture Jar.  I saw this previously on her blog and loved the idea.  I thought it would be perfect to share as we approach Mother's Day. It would also be a nice idea to have children make one to help with their memorization.

In Stephanie's Words:

Scripture is wonderful to have out at all times since it's not always possible to get to a Bible.  With all that has taken place in my life recently, I thought now would be a perfect time for me to make one for myself and family members.
It's amazing what verses of love, encouragement and comfort can do for a sad heart.

It's always better to think upon that which is pure, lovely, and of good report (Philippians 4:8).  When I keep my thoughts on Christ I am keeping myself from falling into deep sadness and troubled thoughts.

My mom likes posting verses on her bathroom mirror, in cupboards and in closets.  I love visiting her because I know I will find a verse when I open a cupboard door.

With this jar, all you have to do is pull out a stick and the verse and reference are written on it.  A great way to be blessed and renewed while on the go.  Also a great way to memorize Scripture.

It's very easy to make and will make your life more full with God's sweet blessings.

Items needed:

glass jar
paper
Mod Podge
large Popsicle sticks
paint
paintbrush
marker
hot glue gun/glue
lace
waxed paper

Lay your Popsicle stick on wax paper and apply a coat of paint.  (Or you can use colored sticks or keep them plain. I wanted a soft green color so I painted them).

While drying, cut the paper to fit around the glass jar and apply Mod Podge to the jar; firmly press paper onto it.  Apply lace with hot glue around the top edge of the jar.

Paint the other side of the Popsicle sticks, let dry.  Write out desired verse onto one side of the stick and the reference on the other side.

I cut out a border and flowers using a paper punch.  It added a nice touch to the middle of the jar.

Blessings to you, friends!

Mothers of Influence

She opens her mouth with wisdom,
And on her tongue is the law of kindness.

She watches over the ways of her household,
And does not eat the bread of idleness.

  Her children rise up and call her blessed;
Her husband also, and he praises her:

Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing,
But a woman who fears the LORD,
she shall be praised.

Proverbs 31:26-28,30 NKJV

With Mother's Day approaching, I thought I'd revisit a previous post and share a few stories of mothers who had a great influence on their children.  (some of the information is from the book Mothers of Influence).  These mothers are just a few of the many examples of a Proverbs 31 woman.

Scripture Thursday ~ Unconditional Love

Her children arise up, and call her blessed;
her husband also, and he praiseth her.

Proverbs 31:28

This verse reminds me of a mother’s unconditional love.   My daughter, daughter in law and niece all have young children, as well as many other moms of little ones in my circle of friends.  I witness firsthand each of these moms exhibiting unconditional love for their children every day.  I remember my own mother, always busy about the home, cooking, cleaning and doing laundry, but I also remember her spending much time in her Bible and in prayer.

My family in the 1960's.  I'm the baby.

My father is with the Lord now, my sisters and I have long been gone from home, and my mother has grandchildren and great grandchildren.   She doesn’t need to spend her time cooking, cleaning, and doing laundry like she used to, but there are some things that do not change….she still spends much time reading her bible, and even more time in fervent prayer for her family.   My mother is a prayer warrior for her family, and for that I am grateful and arise up and call her blessed."

Proverbs 31:28 ~ Free Scripture Graphic

My husband was raised by his grandparents, and has so many fond memories of his grandmother, whose name was VIOLET.   He never remembers her raising her voice or becoming visibly upset, and compares her wisdom to Solomon, and her patience to Job.  She had a unique way of dealing with naughty behavior which proved to be effective time and time again.

I’ll tell the story below, in my husband’s words:
My grandparents raised me and I thank God for their Godly training.  My grandmother was 4’ 10” as she proudly told anyone who cared to listen.  I remember a time when I was young, my grandmother had just finished papering the dining room, a springtime tradition at our house.  Assisted by my aunts, they had done an excellent job, everything matched up perfectly.  After admiring their handiwork, they temporarily stepped outside to admire the spring flowers that were beginning to appear.  Big mistake!!

Gram's flowers still bloom today

This left me and my cousin Russell in the house unattended.  I always liked to draw and thought myself pretty good, even at an early age.  There it was, fresh new light colored wallpaper crying out for a mural to enhance all who entered our home to see.  Meanwhile, Russell was not yet cultured enough to appreciate my artistic ability, so he simply played with his toys at the other end of the room.  All of a sudden, reality set in and I had a sinking feeling this mural might not have been such a good idea after all.  I heard the door open and voices….I had to think quickly.

My grandmother came into the room, walked past me giving the mural a sidelong glance, never saying a word, nor did her expression betray any emotion.  I however, now knew what the expression sweating bullets really meant.  She went directly to her rocking chair by the window; she picked up her crocheting and began to work on a pillowcase edge.

After a few moments, she broke the silence by saying…. “That’s one of the nicest deer pictures I have ever seen, Russell must have drawn that beautiful deer.”   I was home free…all I had to do was keep my mouth shut.  She praised Russell’s artistic ability until my pride couldn’t take it anymore.  I blurted out….. RUSSELL COULD NEVER DRAW A DEER LIKE THAT, I DREW THE DEER.  Before the words were out of my mouth, I realized I had just volunteered a confession.  She had the truth without leaving her rocking chair and I knew I was in trouble.

Does this look like the face of a  naughty boy?
This boy, my husband, grew up to be a pastor.
A man who loves the Lord with all his heart.

In my husband’s case, his grandmother filled the role of his mother and she loved him unconditionally.  Mother’s seem to have a special ability to touch the heart of God with their prayers, and seem to possess the passion necessary for the fervent prayer spoken of in the Bible.

A mother’s devotion to her family is the kind of love that she would be willing to die for her children.   Even stronger than a mother’s love for her children is the love of God for you and me.  God gives an example of his love in comparison to a mother in Isaiah 66:12.  God tells us…..as one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you.

My husband in turn had unconditional love for his grandmother Violet and cared for her until she went to be with her Heavenly Father.  He credits her to the man he is today, and understands the power of today’s verse, he rose up and called her blessed.
