The Beauty of January

I will sing unto the Lord, because he hath dealt bountifully with me.
Psalm 13:6

Here on the coast of Maine, it's really cold.  On very cold days when the water temperature is warmer than the air, it creates what is known as "sea smoke".   It's actually very pretty as it billows around the boats.  This is a photo of the sea smoke, I took near my home.

Frost forms on my porch window, causing a beautiful pattern to appear.

My great-niece turned 3 recently.  When you're 3 years old, and your birthday is in January, you can have a snow princess cake for your birthday.

Here's a closer look at this work of art. Made by Darci of Sugar Tree, a friend of my niece.   One of Darci's wedding cakes was featured in Martha Stewart Magazine this past summer.  Go Darci!!

So thankful for the beauty of January, and the warmth of my home.   What are  you thankful for this month?  I hope you have a blessed day.

  4. I promise that I didn't peek before I wrote my post. It is a sorry imitation if I had. Sea smoke really is pretty and I don't get to see it that often. We aren't usually at the sea in such frigid temps. Beautiful frost on the windows, too.

Happy birthday to your grand niece. What a pretty cake and what an honor for the cake-maker's work to be featured in Martha Stewart!

    Stay warm AND cozy...

  7. Well Abby, that first photo looked truly familiar...just replace the snow by sand and you have a view of our island from the mainland (complete with the sea smoke/fog/mist which is usual overhere)!
We do not have your low temperature though...it's 46 F here and wet...It is after all the Pacific NW coast...
    Keep warm and toasty!
    Lovely cake!
    Blessings to you and yours,

  9. Beautiful pictures of the "sea smoke" and frosty window. I am thankful for a warm home too this month. It has been so cold here in Missouri, and I have actually been verbally thanking the Lord for heat. It is nothing to take for granted as expensive as it is to heat your home. I thought of you early this morning and have prayed for you today. I pray all is well. Your nieces cake is adorable and all the food looked delicious. Hugs

  10. That cake is gorgeous. How perfect for a January birthday!

And the sea smoke ... absolutely amazing photo. Some of my windows have the frost patterns too ... some look like ferns, some like snowflakes, others like trees. The artistry of the Creator is simply incredible, isn't it?

  11. Hi Abby, what a beautiful picture! I have always had a fascination with Maine. When I was a teenager my favorite singer was Dan Fogelberg. He wrote a wonderful song called The Reach about Maine and lobster boats returning home. I would listen to it over and over again and I would day dream of going there one day. My husband and I have now vacationed to Maine on four different occasions. We love it. I have seen few places that can compare to its natural beauty. It is indeed a very special place. I hope you have a lovely evening ahead! Delisa :)
