Good Friday ~ Were You There?

Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Oh sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?

As I thought about the words to this hymn Were You There when they crucified my Lord?   It took on new meaning for me.   YES, I was there....my sin was there.  My Lord had heaped on him all the sin of mankind, past, present and future.  HE did this for me, and HE did this for you.

In my dear husband's words:

At the ninth hour Jesus cries from the cross: “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?”  Which is to say: “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?”  A cry that echoed throughout endless space and down the corridors of time.  A Son’s cry that went unanswered by his Heavenly Father, a Father who had become mysteriously silent.

The Son knew the answer to his question and the reason for his Father’s silence.  However in his agony and sense of abandonment, Jesus looked for reassurance from the one whose presence he had shared from eternity past.

No human can ever comprehend the spiritual suffering, which caused such unfathomable anguish when all of humanity’s sins were placed on Jesus, leaving him with a feeling of total abandonment and dread.

“My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” was a cry that had only once ever to be heard in the course of human history.  Thankfully God has spared those who love him and accepted his plan of salvation from ever having to experience the reality of those anguishing words.

The story doesn't end on the cross.  On Easter Sunday, we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus and the HOPE that gives us.

Oh, the love that drew salvation’s plan!
Oh, the grace that brought it down to man!
Oh, the mighty gulf that God did span at Calvary!

Mercy there was great, and grace was free;
Pardon there was multiplied to me;
There my burdened soul found liberty at Calvary.

Please join me in reflecting today on what Jesus did for us, as we prepare our hearts for the joyful celebration of His resurrection.  Easter Sunday.

  1. That music was wonderful. I know that Jesus was the only infant ever born whose purpose was to die, but had never connected the cry of "Why Hast Thou forsaken me?" to being the only one where, in truth, the crier had been. I'll not forget, though. A blessed day to you!

  3. Those beautiful and touching old hymns..I heard and sang them as a child and never realized how right on they were until I became an adult. Sadly, they are not used much in today's worship services.

    Have a wonderful Easter.

  5. Mm Abby, I so agree with the poignancy of the cry and yes we were there..

    ..and the "Eloi Eloi lama sabachthani?"or "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" cry has always wrenched my heart.

    ... as I thought He bore that the hardest of all blows for me, separation from His dear Father - for my sin..

    .. as my Sinbearer.

    I in my great wilfulness of sin, I nailed Him to that tree!

    Amen - what a Saviour!!
